Dave \”DC\” Cung
One of the most respected players out there. Well known to the pros. Plays the highest stakes there is here, the man responsible for calling the \”big game\” to order.
An idol to many, for a few good reasons. DC has it all together. Although he could easily make a living at the game and a good one, he plays on his terms. A tycoon in real estate, he hits the felts worldwide, when he is in the mood.
Oddly enough, this is how I met Dave, not at the felts, but through my \”real job\” and years ago before I had even thought of poker. At the time he was playing 4/8 and I was doing renovation work for him. The next time we met he gave me an experience most players pay big bucks for.
After introducing me to Brad Booth, he invited me to watch the table on the good side of the rope. Over his shoulder I stared across the felt at Phil \”the uni bomber\” Laak. In front of these players, wads of hundreds, just like on the TV show \”High Stakes Poker.\” With my low limit cash in my pocket, I was so tempted to play over and pay a few blinds just to be dealt in a few hands at this table. Even though I knew I would fold quicker than a dropped accordian. I know this great group of guys would have chuckled and let me donate it. But in my heart I knew that to sit here is a privelage that can\’t be snuck into. I knew that if I am ever to play them, I will play them straight up and right.
If you want to play Dealers Choice with DC during a circut event ring game, 20-60k should be a decent starting buy-in. 25-25-50 Pot Limit or 25-50NL. Some pots hit upwards of 80,000 dollars.
What is strange to hear is that he considers himself new to tourney in comparision to most. If I placed this well in half the events he has, I\’d think I was pro, lol. I\’ve seen big guys offer to make him a star, he tells them to keep it and play some cards. But he says it kindly and is always smilling. Another reason he is admired.
Check this out: http://www.pokerpages.com/players/profiles/56108/davecung.htm Throw in his 2007 Booth Charity Classic win for 100k mixed with his 17.5k quarter final finish in the 5k HU this year…I only dream to be this good.
Dave cashes deep in the money in better than half the ones he plays. But he normally can\’t be bothered if there is a good ring game going. I have seen him leave a medium stakes tourney with a stack of chips. He was just playing to pass time before the \”real game\”.
What is also missing in his player profile is his 2nd place finish in the World Poker Showdown ( http://www.worldpokershowdown.com/ ) in the Dominican a few months back.
While I played Event #5 at the Canadian poker Open, I found myself jammed in with a few of the PLO guys. The owner of the World Poker Showdown was one of them. He asked another high limit guy \”What the hell are they gonna call Cung for a poker nickname?\” I said \”DC is what they all call him and it just seems to work.\”
They all agreed, it really does. You pick your game, and smilling away and carefree, Dave will give some action and he usually comes away with the better piece of it. And always a gentleman on and off the table.
Rumour has it, Dave will be attacking some PLO events at this years WSOP, more than likely mid June. By far one of the best at the Omaha game, many top TV guys will back that up. That is if Dave wakes up one morning and just decides to go, it\’s how he rolls and it works well for him.
Without a doubt a local legend that could realisticly end up with a bracelet.
